Zeroing In

talking to myself
               —thanks for the echo, lola

here’s what i thought i was doing: alchemizing
an experience into a poem,
locating words to evoke
the spying of a crescent moon
through leaves,
counting syllables to form a tanka,
fine-tuning the music,
plumbing both the joy
and the centering of composing.

and i was doing that.

but a reader later echoes two lines back to me
and, as though i hadn’t drafted them myself,
i now hear them as she hears them,
as an invitation
to seek a tiny peephole / in the canopy
of the crowded,
chaotic,
convoluted world
around us.

i accept!

and so i find seeds sheltered in the womb of a sweet pepper,
shake them out, slice cleanly through taut skin and flesh,
tuck bright red strips into a container with hummus.
in gloucester where i picnic beside the harbor—
as blustery sea air cools my skin, herring gulls cavort above,
a young man piggybacks his toddler, a border collie fetches
a frisbee from the saltwater—
the snap of firm sun-ripened pepper releases
a microburst of flavor.

Notes about poem and art:
• “talking” was great fun to write! Lola’s comment after reading “predawn moon’s telltale” stopped me in my tracks because she’d perceived a metaphor, i.e. advice for how to live in a crowded world of stimuli, whereas I’d been focused solely on communicating the act of seeking a literal peephole in a canopy of literal leaves through which I might be able to see the literal moon. And yet, was I not taking my own advice even then when I dialed my focus way way down and away from all competing stimuli, in that case, to write a poem?
• Does today’s art link with today’s poem? It did not at the time of its coming into being, but what do I do every time I sit to paint if not seek a tiny peephole / in the canopy / of the crowded, / chaotic, / convoluted world / around us? I dial my focus way way down and away from all competing stimuli to be with what is right in front of me. In this case, when I stood back to view what had emerged, I remembered Making Pretzels With Julie and Reeva circa 1973.

  1. A poem about writing a poem about being open to seeing and experiencing the the world in a new way! Yes!

And OMG….pretzels! Yes! And they would pair well with the humus!

    1. Thanks for your yes!, MaryAnn. Today’s poem just had to be written!

I love the back and forth of conversation with my commenting blog followers because I inevitably learn something new or see something from a new perspective. Also, very appealingly, I love that comments reflecting back my own words often feel like wisdom that is brand new to me!!!

Have you ever made soft pretzels from scratch? De-LISH!

I may need your pretzel recipe.

        1. I know you know of what I speak re our blog conversations ❤️

That particular pretzel recipe is long gone, alas, but I’m sure you could find a great recipe on line. Regrettably, my gluten ingesting days are also a thing of the past so I have no current recipe, nor do I elect to replace the original with a GF version!

  2. This was one of the poems (and reflections) that I entered into google translate (How much English have I learned from you). I’m glad that through the translating the meaning suddenly becomes clear. You write so ‘imaginative’, is that the word?! Or visceral? I can hear the pepper snap!

    1. Simone, thanks so much for taking the time to find your way to the heart of my poem. And thanks for your feedback, feedback that will feed me as I continue to write poetry and reflections : ) Love that you can hear the pepper snap! That, of course, was my hope!

  3. my

    word.

you have dazzled me with this exercise! Drawn me into Alice’s rabbit hole and plopped me into a mad tea party (where pretzels are served). What words can do, examined thusly, is pure magic. I adore this, Dotty! And that the whole enchilada took you back to 1973!!! Xoxoxox

    1. Lola!

I wish you could have seen me when I read your comment in response to “predawn moon’s telltale” a few weeks ago! Your seeing the bigger picture in my little one had me agog! SUCH a gift. And then I had the fun of writing this one as a way to explore the agog. Thanks for going down the rabbit hole with me. Sugar in your tea? Mustard with your pretzel?

Thank you! many many times over!!!

Wow! Now that is a great ending. It is so evocative. I can even see the slight spray from the crisp deliciousness. Bravo, Dotty.

Pretzels is so fun and warm. I want to lift it and look over and under, behind, and through. LOL. 🙂

    1. Sheila—wow, thanks for your delight in the way I ended “Talking to Myself.” I’m happy to hear it was so evocative, and that you could see the slight spray—success!!

You’ve caught the spirit of Pretzels also. It’s been decades since that adventure but I can still remember the heft and beauty of those pretzels made from scratch with new friends from my first job out of college, and then the magnificent treat of taking a bite into that warm baked twist of texture and flavor : )

  5. Yes,a poem about poem writing! Aren’t we all “seeking a peephole” to try to understand the world around us?

Making Pretzels With Julie and Reeva love the palette and movement! And of course the negative spaces in between!

    1. Indeed: a metapoetic poem! And, yes, we are all seeking a peephole to try to understand the world around us!

Thanks for your affirming nods to palette, movement, and negative space in Making Pretzels. This piece was a fun one to paint … for all of those reasons : )
