auspice
i step outdoors into the charcoal velvet of predawn,
stride into my day, greet crescent moon
and orion who both shine just above the treeline
as mr. kenley, in my audiobook, grabs his son’s hand
and points to a vast star-studded sky, saying
“look! see the three stars in orion’s belt?”
moon and i
lock eyes—break into matching crooked grins, deeply felt.

Notes about poem and art:
• Nothing better than starting the day with fresh air, surprise, and joy, all comingling to create a feeling of “auspice.” This moon-and-stars story is set in another demi-sonnet (with one sneaky split line), this one the pesky one that pulled me off my yoga mat briefly a few days ago to capture a few phrases : )
• Unpave the Way is a new experiment with ink and water, this time augmented by collage, collage that was not in the plan whatsoever until, while splitting my focus between painting and a text conversation with my sisters about the expression feckin’ eejit, I dropped an ink-filled pipette onto my painting-in-progress and then onto my slacks, proving myself to be, perhaps, a feckin’ eejit!
• With both today’s poem and art, there was no telling in advance whether the way would be paved or unpaved.
