Ever the Place I’ll Take for My Home

t-a-k-o-d-a-h, takodah, all hail!

even after all the times
i’ve turned off route 119
and passed through
the camp takodah
booster gate to drive
up the dirt road
into camp—
CAMP!!!—
first at 9 years of age
and then again
and again
and again
as camper,
LIT,
kitchen worker,
leader,
division head,
family camper,
and as transport
for my children
and now my grandchildren
,
themselves campers
and leaders,
every
single
time,
butterflies
in lepidopteran
generation
after generation
after generation
for nearly 70 years

have spread their wings
to thump softly

against the inner walls
of my tummy
in the same way as did
the 1959 butterflies
who made it impossible
for me to eat anything more
than a small bowl
of rice krispies
before heading to camp
on opening day
to this place
i’ll forever call home
.

Notes on poem and art:
• “t-a-k-o-d-a-h” is an homage to YMCA Camp Takodah in Richmond, NH.
camp!!! remains a favorite among all the paintings I’ve created over the years, both for what it holds symbolically and for the painting effects I was able to achieve, effects that bring alive the embodied sensory feelings of being at camp. This painting makes a fitting conclusion to my current Make Yourself at Home series.

  1. Rice Krispies my favorite cereal LOL! Found memories of summer days spent at Camp! Love the format of the poem!

That is a universal cabin! Home away from home! Brings back fond memories. Seems we share lots! I also went YMCA  in New Hampshire called Treasure Island. Same cabin!

    1. Thanks for the link! Interesting. Treasure Island was a girl scout camp, the YMCA was in Maine, name has eluded me! For some odd reason I am not getting email notice when you reply, was a nice feature. I think this post and the last!

  2. Good morning, Carol! LOL that you’ve connected with the Rice Krispies. I remember being so grateful that the RK were not much more than air when I could barely eat from excitement and nervousness : )

Thanks for letting me know you liked the format of this poem. It felt like a long filament as I wrote it, the long strong filament of camp that is woven into my life fabric.

So gratifying that you see the “universal cabin” here! Your comment prompted me to do a bit of research. Check out this link if you so wish: https://gemini.google.com/share/b9d82ec918c8.

How lucky are you that you have this special place to call home. Your poem captures the love and affection for it…and your painting captures the beauty and essence of being there. Well done Dotty! I love that your grandchildren are carrying on the tradition! Oh no! The end of the Make Yourself at Home Series? I’ve loved the journey!

    1. MaryAnn, indeed, SO fortunate! As I may have mentioned at some other place in my blog, Takodah (founded in 1916) was run for fifty consecutive years by my maternal grandfather’s cousin and his wife. It’s where my mom, uncle, and aunt all went as campers/leaders, all my sisters and I went as campers/leaders, and now two more generations! After my mom died, I saved out a bit of her ashes and interred them in the woods behind cabin C. Whenever I drop off or pick up Caroline now, I stop to visit my mom ❤️

Thanks for your comments and for loving my Make Yourself at Home series.

  4. The butterflies! The generations of campers! I am excited just reading your poem! Though I never had the experience, your words put it just within reach. 🙂

Love the conclusion to your series! Now I am wondering – what’s next? xo

    1. The butterflies! It’s fun to consider the generation after generation that has accompanied me through many an adventure, challenge, or excitement in life.

Love that my words have put the camp experience “just within reach.” Ta da!

About what comes next … I am wondering right along with you, Lola!

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.
