Reverse-Pinch

talisman

in the pocket of her heart
the woman carries
these words: and this too.
a string of words like
tiny powerful charms
that the fingers
of her most present self
keep smooth in the way
the fingers of her hand
might caress a string
of greek worry beads.
the awareness
embedded in the words
grounds her practice
of seeking beauty and joy,
shining light where
there might otherwise
be darkness—in times of distress,
in times of chaos, in times of turmoil.
but also shining light
as a way of being.
today,
in a time of tension,
the words call her attention
to a deep radiant knowing
that beyond the clouds
and beyond the rain that fell
day after day this week,
the sun whose warmth
the woman cannot feel on her skin
or in her hair,
and the full moon
she misses this month
from her earthbound position
beneath the cloud cover,
have not left their orbits
nor their celestial certainty.
they have never once abandoned her.
as her heart beats,
it pulses her mantra:
and this too
this sun,
this moon,
their beauty,
her joy.

Notes about poem and art:
• I see “talisman” and You Don’t Have to Knock as reverse-pinch expanded versions of “i caress the pearl” and The Hatches, LOL!

  1. I find your poem positive, yes, this turmoil will end. Saneness will return and we we will all come to your houses for coffee or tea. Inshallah!

Sending you lots of sun and warmth!

Oh my goodness I couldn’t love this poem…and this Make Yourself At Home piece more.

And This Too….yes yes yes! This and that….the colors….the seasons…the tiny surprises are pinching us to notice them. That is where the joy is in the midst of the chaos.

And this colorful geometric welcoming wonky doodle neighborhood is simply fabulous. I love it all…but I especially love the little labels.

    1. MaryAnn, thank you for your lovely comments! I’m so glad “talisman” struck a chord with you—you who are such a grand noticer and modeler of noticing.

And, speaking of noticing, it warms my heart that you caught and loved the tiny labels in the wonky doodle neighborhood!

Powerful indeed. I will add this string to my own thoughts and pockets. It is masterful wisdom. And “You Don’t Have To Knock” made me smile! The jumble of joy in it makes me smile!! xoxoxo

    1. Lola, powerful charms in so many places when we open our eyes and hearts, yes? Were you ever in Brownies or Girl Scouts? We can tuck this talisman in our pockets “like a great big Brownie smile” !!!

Thanks, too, for loving the jumble of joy in You Don’t Have to Knock”

  5. I love the art. And I had to meander through the neighborhood. A quick peek wouldn’t do.

The words. Your words. They will be with me for along while, I think.

    1. Meandering through the neighborhood—perfect! Your mention of that calls to mind a particular crowded neighborhood Dave and I explored in Gloucester after a harborside picnic last summer. So much to see. So much fodder for imagining ourselves living there in that space so different from our own : )

Thank you for letting me know the words of my poem have a stick-to-it-ive-ness.
