card #26 in series of color swatches

Notes about poem and art:
“Daybreak” captures in a few syllables the feeling of waking to our first dawn on Whidbey Island in September in a rented home right at the water’s edge.
Dry Footfalls is my color swatch memento from walks in the island neighborhood where we stayed for four days.

Photo taken from the stairs coming down from our loft bedroom,
looking out windows of the main living space to the deck at high tide.

  1. Maybe if I try real hard I can smell the sea when its low!

Fall is in the air! Brown and yellow green. Great palette

Hope the tide doesn’t get higher!

    1. We live only a 10 minute drive from the Atlantic here in Massachusetts but even that is a far cry from living right on the water, being in tune with the tides and the everchanging palette and texture of the water 24/7. The home we rented on Whidbey was on fascinating very narrow road with houses right at water’s edge and very friable ledge/cliffs directly behind them.

Thanks for your thumbs up to the palette in this color swatch. I enjoyed playing with the end-of-season muted colors.

A simple little poem and a sweet swatch painting….what a wonderful way to capture your waterfront sanctuary.

    What a view!

    1. Thanks, MaryAnn! I do love the way writing a simple little poem and painting sweet color swatches strengthen the embodied memories of our waterfront sanctuary.

That photograph of the view captures the feeling I had many times while in residence at that home of being a passenger in an ocean liner leaning against the railing on deck!

  3. Dotty!!! Those gradations of sand color! The tide way out, the beach exposed, the beauty of being near the ever changing coastline. Sigh. Such bliss! Thank you for the mini mental vacation offered by this post! xoxo

    1. Lola!!! Thank you! Each time I look at this card—and I just pulled it out to indulge again—and reread “Daybreak,” I am right back on Whidbey. The tide, the beach, the trails, the ferns. Your comment opens the door for me to join you in a mini mental vacation : )

    1. Totally ahhhh. Just reading your words—deep sigh, peaceful feeling—brings me right back to that place of ahhhh.

The earth textured tones kept the ahhhh in place : )

      Thanks, Sheila.

  6. That ON-the-water porch was just incredible.

I enjoyed the Easter egg hunt of finding the green. 💚

    1. Totally awesome deck on that could-we-be-any-closer-to-the-water rental, gotta say.

Chuckling at your reference to the “Easter egg hunt of finding”—A+! Fun to know that you had to hunt for the green and had fun doing so.

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

My compass points: bust through fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
