Daring

ringling brother

he positions himself with very specific calculus
along a street that edges the fairgrounds,
and coaxes the moon—full of itself tonight,
and ever up for a chance to shine—
to roll across the taut line
of a telephone cable, while he,
the ticket-taker with tight-wire dreams,
glides along in tandem on a grass verge, eyes steady.
man and moon
moon and man
moving in near-perfect synchrony—
faltering
only once—
for the duration of their brilliant performance,
no net to catch them.

Notes about poem and painting:
• “ringling brother” is another poem inspired by a predawn walk, this one lit by a not-yet-set full moon.
• The creative act of painting often has a bit of a tight-wire dream in it for me—I go in with Eyes Steady and see what takes place!

  1. We both see the same moon at different times… that full moon in the western sky shown through my bedroom window and woke me up with its bright light! I see a man walking tightrope against the setting full moon…. maybe real maybe dream!

Love this color palette in your inchie! Who says a sky can’t be green!

    Rolling hills!

    1. We do both see the same moon! The particular one that inspired the poem was probably the July or August moon. Much to my disappointment this month’s full moon was MIA b/c of a nor’easter. I saw the moon just now on my predawn walk for the first time in eight long days!

Don’t you just love how a few simple ink lines can make green read as sky?!

Thx for commenting, Carol; I always enjoy hearing from you.

Don’t you love it when you catch the moon in mid circus performance! And I know I love how you found a few simple ink lines to define an unexpected landscape. Yes….let’s keep our Eyes Steady and see what takes place!

    1. Ooooo, you caught the spirit of that limited run, limited tickets, one night only performance. I was just thinking about popcorn yesterday and how early in life it was that I understood that there could never be too much popcorn!

So grateful for your steady enthusiasm and encouragement, Lola. You are my popcorn!! xoxoxo

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my creative practice.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

In 2025 I begin writing poetry and include a poem and painting in each post.

My compass points: shake hands with fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
