Vacation, Front-Row Seat

Notes about poem and art:
• Oh, that sweet spare loft, those age-darkened rafters, that tiny dormer, that rustic space with just enough room to arrange a chair and two beds so as to allow just enough footroom and headroom to get to each one! “aloft” is a poem written in tanka form in one-to-one correspondence with the loft itself—small in scale, expansive in impact.
Front-Row Seat is one unit of what began as my exploratory copy of the piece painted by artist Kata Hull. To back up a bit in this art history, before heading on vacation in early June to “The Wicked Cute Camp” at Norton Pond, I penciled lightly into my watercolor sketchbook a grid with 90 small squares. Then I packed my sketchbook into a carry bag with a pan of watercolors, a couple of brushes, a pencil, an eraser, and a small towel. Ongoing details to follow.

  2. Making small spaces expansive! Probably a window to let in the cool breeze… sleeping tight and comfy!

Wow you succeeded in making the image grow on my screen! YAY!

Love all the squares that you have given them space to breathe! Great collage piece brings the poem and watercolor together!

    1. We didn’t sleep in the loft but it was perfect for my daily meditation, one of the many magical spaces in our tiny vacation cottage. It had a side window and a one-window-wide dormer on the front, and it was open to the rest of the cottage below, so cross ventilation was good.

I did figure out how to allow for image enlargement on the screen. Thank you for the nudge, Carol!

Thanks for your comments on the visual language of this bit of my work in progress. You can see that the dimensions of this piece are small—the sides of each square only three-quarters of an inch, and yet the breathing spaces and judicious selection of collage allowed for 6 bits of collage in this one tile!

I love these poetic windows into your June vacation at the Wicked Cute Camp! And I can picture it well because it sounds like the wicked cool camp where I just spent the weekend!

And this Front Row Seat tile piece makes my heart sing!

    1. Poetic windows—great phrase! Your two most recent blog posts featuring photos of the setting of your recent trip to Monson instantly brought back memories of Dave’s and my trip to Norton Pond : )

Happy to hear that the Front-Row Seat tile piece makes your heart sing—thanks!

  4. FRONT ROW SEAT! And that EYE! It is a metaphor for life! We each have a front row seat! Love what you are creating with these squares…each piece fresh and unexpected!

Don’t we all need a compact sanctuary? Something with just enough space (and not too much) – the bare bones. No flotsam and jetsam! xoxoxoxo

  5. We do each have a front-row seat!

Thank you for “each piece fresh and unexpected”—that is how I experience the creation; so happy you feel that also!

That compact sanctuary was SO yummy. It just really spoke to me each and every day as I paused mid-stream to consciously reconnect with inner stillness in that holy little space of outward stillness.
