Everyday Sacred

benedictus
with a line from James Crews’s “Sacred”

when i say sacred
i mean kapiti’s parakeet eyes
meeting my eyes

as his small flight-light body
stands on our kitchen table
in near stillness, he in failing health,
i in awareness

of our otherwise still-sleeping
household as i whisper
to my long-time shoulder-riding buddy,
i love you, peet-peet.
when i say
sacred i mean his moving
soundlessly closer, one step
followed by the next
in time-out-of-time,

and then his pecking
companionably
at my outstretched
hand. i mean all the times

i pull my car
into our driveway
and, from indoors
,
kapiti—ever alert to my return,
sets up voluble chitter chitter
chitter announcing

im here i’m here
come see me
come see me!
i mean all that transpires wordlessly
between a tiny feather-bright
soul and my human soul
over a span of years,

and does so now
on the day kapiti dies.

Notes about poem and art:
• “benedictus” captures a sacred experience of some 25 years ago now.
• Kapiti, A Tiny Feather-Bright Soul in our home for many years, had as his final resting place a shoebox lovingly interred beside the tiny ornamental pond in our back yard surrounded by forget-me-nots in bloom and only a few feet from where he’d perched once in a 50-foot eastern white pine after riding on my shoulder out the back door and then flying high!

  1. I am always amazed by the connections one has with their pets. Mostly a dog person, had dogs since I remember myself. I just love how you put into words the lovely connection you had with your parakeet even after 25 yrs, amazing. Curious as to what triggered the memories. Reminded me of a pet mouse I had in the dorm at college!

Love how his house is seen and not seen. Lost in the myriad of greens and blues. Hope is still chirping away in parakeet heaven!

    1. Our parakeet was a vibrant member of our household for about 11 years—we were grateful to have such a fantastic friend who didn’t trigger those of the family with allergies. Prior to Kapiti’s arrival, I didn’t have any idea of the depth of relationship that could be established with a bird.

What triggered the memories was poet James Crews’s poem prompt, i.e. “When I say sacred I mean … ” Kapiti bubbled up immedidately, and I looked no further.

Thanks for your comments about Kapiti’s final resting place.

  2. Dotty, this poem and the image have me in tears! How beautiful, this tender connection between you two, and the way he heralded your return each time you came home. That sweet painting, your soft words – what a lucky lucky bird, what a blessed human. xoxoxo

    1. Kapiti was the best! Thank you for stepping so fully into the beautiful, tender connection and for your kind words about my lucky human self who enjoyed a sacred relationship with an engaging little firecracker of a bird!

  3. This was so lovingly evocative for me, Dotty. Our non-human, yet so very alive creature-family members are a part of us for always.

    1. Roseanne, thank you for this affirming reflection, for letting me know this was “lovingly evocative” for you. There is such purity in the connections with the non-human creature family members we are blessed to know. Even now, all these years later, and especially now when so much seems crazy-making and sulled, it’s a blessing to draw from the well of this connection/relationship in my life.

What sweet memories of your feathered friend. And what a sweet watercolor to honor his resting place. Those forget-me-nots are just a delight!

    1. MaryAnn, thanks for your comments and especially for your appreciation of the forget-me-nots; I bumped into many challenges in getting those flowers painted into place in a way that would allow them to make themselves known in all the greenery.

  5. Aww. So warmed to the bones, and then, so very sad. Once again your telling made the images so clear. And the emotions. The connections between humans and animals are so magical, tender, and deeply felt.

I love your painted garden, the view of a sacred place. xoxo

    1. Thank you, Sheila, I’m grateful for your stepping into these sacred moments and this sacred place with me. When we welcomed Kapiti into our home, I had no idea how magical, tender, and deep a relationship was possible with a bird ❤️
