At Home in New Circumstances

in spirit
           |   godspeed, theresa

actively attuned
to distillations of peace,
i notice wellness
radiating quietly and evenly
throughout my body
and in the energetic
space surrounding me,

the memory of your warmth
and approachability
fueling my stride
as i walk up and down
the aisles of market basket
in a steady cadence.
i hear the heel of each shoe

meet the polished
floor tiles, left foot,
right foot, left foot, right,
feeling in each step
your can-do
confident purposefulness
reverberating up
through my bones,

sensing the gentle wash
of air on my face as i move
forward, humbled
to be doing just this:

shopping for ripe avocados,
for juicy lemons, for snap peas
and almond butter,
receiving dave’s text
from across the store
—got the eggs!—
conversing back and forth

back and forth
with pria and gerry
in our weekly
flurry of check-out chat
and laughter,
keeping alive the glow
of weekly check-in chats
with you on yoga days,

grateful for my heart,
beating,
grateful for my lungs,
breathing.

it could be otherwise.

Notes on poem and art:
• “in spirit” was written in memoriam to honor and celebrate the life of Theresa Woodbury, the vibrant capable young director of my local senior center who died in March 2026. Theresa made that space and program a dynamic lively home away from home where seniors in my community connect and participate, so much so that we have to fight for parking spaces!
• I continue to explore my current house series with collaged scraps harvested from art I’ve created over the years. In this particular square on my work-in-progress paper quilt, I decreased context clues and further simplified the collection of shapes I selected.

  1. Wishing you all the best and many more excursions to the supermarket!

    it could be otherwise.

    Beautiful words full of meaning.

Really love the recent addition to your house series! Strong dark middle piece balanced well with the surrounding pieces.

    1. Carol, I have to laugh at how often excursions to the supermarket are the inception point for poems! Thank you for reflecting back lines that held “beautiful words full of meaning.”

Your visual language feedback gets me to wondering how conscious my decisions were when I was creating this piece—e.g. how much and in what ways did I rely on intuition, intuition that may well have been informed by prior experience/learning (or not), and how much and in what ways did I explicitly plan to, say, balance a strong dark middle piece with surrounding pieces, etc.

      Thank you for your comments!

What a wonderful tribute to Theresa! I love your line about competing for parking places….best compliment ever! I love the playfulness at Market Basket between you and Dave as you shop for avocados and practice gratitude.

The third home in your series is warm, wonky and wonderful!

    1. MaryAnn, love that you love my mention of competing for parking places—on Thursdays when I go to the unfailingly upbeat, feel-good, and informational-to-boot all-thing-Apple computer class, I have to leave home at least 15 minutes later than would be needed to, say, go to the enterprise across the street, and even then I’m lucky to find parking! Very poignant loss, with T’s having young kids.

Playing with warm and wonky dwellings has been fun—glad you’re enjoying their wonderfulness!

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

My compass points: bust through fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
