Make Yourself at Home

open house

at sixty-four years
i hear a knock at my door,
odd enough, just that,

but i turn the knob
and there stands painting—big grin.
i say, come on in!

not hesitating
in the least, i tell you true,
it opens windows

wide, flings open doors

i am long in the habit
of keeping bolted
,

marches into rooms
i didn’t know existed,
for pete’s sake! and then,

seeing ev’rything
open in invitation,
poetry enters

ready to spill out
and make itself known, too, bold
as brass on the page!

so i find myself
painting and writing most days,
all these years along

still a beginner
unfailingly at my edge,
learning whate’er’s next.

even now—ev’ry
time
—before i begin: short
of breath, heart in throat
.

Notes about poem and art:
• I set myself the challenge of writing in a string of haiku verses; ended up with my story told in 170 syllables! Vis à vis my creative practice, “open house” is a combined short history, current update, and nod to the start of a new art exploration.
• With I Hear a Knock I set myself the challenges of using watercolor paints on a page from Little Women instead of on watercolor paper, overlaying gold neurographic linework on black, and incorporating collage cut from a roofing advert delivered to my curbside mailbox.

  1. What a beautiful story comparing your start at painting as an “open house”….. and then letting another for your exploration of poetry! Love how “painting” opens up new doors, windows and new rooms!

Nice idea to paint of a printed page. Your gold and black lines are certainly having a nice conversation with each other! Love the collage pieces, like from my home to yours!

I am coming along with configuration of my mail. Keep your fingers crossed!

    1. Carol, thanks for reflecting back your seeing the beauty of my start to painting and then again to writing poetry as an open house. That’s the way it has felt. Come on in! Let the wind blow through! Explore! Discover!

It was fun to paint again on a page of text from a book. I like the way the text offers depth and hints of story. Also a subtle rectilinear element to balance the flow of neurographic swirls and the flow of watercolor.

My fingers are crossed that you’ll be able to sort the configuration of your mail. Have you tapped Gemini or ChatGPT for assistance? Gemini has helped me through several computer-related headaches, to my great gratitude.

      1. I have asked Ai sometimes I can’t keep track. That’s how I found that my subscriber list was not connected to to my mailer. Hoping for the best.

What a beautiful way to share your creative journey through painting and writing. It’s such a perfect combo for you….and it’s so clear that it feels like home. The watercolor with neurographic linework combo on the book page and the use of the images from the junk mail evokes that journey home. Nicely done Dotty!

  3. MaryAnn, thank you for the exact words you’ve used here to express what you see in this post’s poem and art and in my creative journey at large. My sisters and I have just recently been having a (text) conversation about times in our lives when we have found ourselves at home in ourselves and times we have not. My creative practice is a space that indeed feels like home.

  4. Dotty!!!! OMG OMG OMG! This!!!! Your words, this piece of art (which is THE BOMB! Absolute perfection!) and the fact you opened the door when you heard the knock! YES!!!

We’re all beginners every day, right? Standing at the edge! Throwing caution to the wind!

I am so so so grateful for you and all you create. xoxo

    1. Lola!!!! I am so so so grateful for your heartfelt cheerleading! We ARE all beginners every day. Standing at the edge. Throwing caution to the wind. In every way imaginable. So funny to think I EVER had the delusion that I was ‘in control’ in any way : ) I LOVE lobbing words and art back and forth through cyberspace through our blogs. xoxo ❤️

  6. I wish the blog like button was a LOVE button. Or even better, a “Wow, I love this, Dotty!” button. You know, maybe it could be like a mood ring, and some how it would just “know” the right level of enthusiasm. Haha. I love the journey your words led me through. I can see the door, the windows, the sun.
The depth in Knock, has me wanting to crawl into that space. To get closer to the light. And to follow the shadow paths to see where they lead. I love the tiny homes. That there are two. Friends. That in the wild and unknown universe, there is still a glimpse of home. The home that we carry with us. The home in our heart.
This piece made my eyes widen with excitement. Thank you, Dotty!

    1. Sheila!!! So grateful for your feedback. Both the poem and the painting challenged me in welcome ways. I had inner synapses firing that wanted outward expression, and I had to express/revise/express/revise/express/revise to get the outward to as close as possible to the inner, AND I wanted poem and art to work together (a challenge I don’t routinely set myself).

In my life’s creative journey, opening myself to painting and later picking up long dormant threads and opening myself in a focused way to writing poetry … those openings felt like a homecoming of sorts, a home that, as you put it, I carry with me, a home in my heart.

I’m so appreciative of your “getting” the depth here, both physically in the art and figuratively in the underlying message.

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

My compass points: bust through fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
