embraces
with a line from Heidi Seaborn’s “What It’s Like to Fall in Love”
i fall in love today
with the snow plow driver who scrapes the blade against prospect street,
and i love the machine’s backup beep beep beep as it maneuvers in the cul de sac.
i’m in love with my weather-disrupted schedule
& even the slippery outdoor conditions’ keeping me from my morning walk.
i love the three chestnuts that sit on my desk in a small white ceramic dish
& , for no good reason, i love the lightbulb that just burned out in my study.
today I fall in love with the fruit fly that’s drawn to the light
of my laptop screen, seeking only to flit freely, only to live.

Notes about poem and art:
• “Embraces” is the third nine-line poem posted with a neurographic sketch of a face that’s part of a subset of my Let’s Face it With Friends series. No poem paired with this subset of art friends is written with a particular sketch in mind but once I have a poem and a portrait on a page together, I look to see if I can discover any connection between them.
• Here in the neurographic neighborhood, many friends are making themselves known, not the least of whom is The Friend who takes hostages through commanding more than her fair share of conversational time. Today, I’m looking for ways to fall in love with that part of her personality! To be present to all that is in my immediate world, to practice finding my way with what is, to look for joy in all directions, to open myself to inner peace.
