dotty seiter: now playing
diary of an artist at work

Collage Botanica Diary, 7

In a long-ago gig working in a florist’s shop, artist Amanda Evanston was tasked with receiving the wholesale deliveries of greens and flowers, unwrapping them, and stocking the walk-in cooler from which the professional florists made selections to arrange into bouquets.

In my current foray into becoming a(n amateur) collage florist, I selected two photos of floral arrangements that appeal to me to which I’ll refer for approximate gestural ideas of the direction I want to go on my canvas.

In order to move in that direction, I collected fodder from my stash of hand-painted collage papers and stocked my metaphorical walk-in cooler. I began by putting some greens in place to provide structure and architecture for creating my expression of the aforementioned floral arrangement.

What a fun way to introduce this next phase of your floral arrangement! It reminds me that a rule of thumb when creating an outdoor floral pots is to include fillers, spillers, and thrillers. I think it can apply to indoor arrangements too and you certainly have nailed the fillers! Such a great foundation for what is certain to be a spectacular arrangement!

    1. MaryAnn, LOVE that fillers-spillers-thrillers rule of (green) thumb! I don’t think I’ve heard it put that way before, though I intuitively know to touch those bases. Grateful for you mention b/c that rule will help guide me as I continue forging ahead with only the vaguest notion of how and when this piece might resolve.
