Mindful Meandering

While I paint and collage and create, the primary gift is presence, being here and now. In large measure, especially as I get increasingly pulled into any one particular creative undertaking, I do not think with verbal language at all but engage wordlessly with the sensory processing of and physical interaction with my emerging art piece.

But, at various stages in the process, my mind does meander from one thought to another, sometimes landing on a practical concern—Uh oh, what time is it? Do I need to start dinner prep?, at other times chewing on an unresolved life circumstance—What on earth am I going to do to make amends for saying what I said at that meeting?

As this series of CutUps of mine has unfolded, I’ve paused more than once to ponder what my muse Henri Matisse may have mused about while he fashioned his paper cut-out creations.

  1. Oh, I do love the colors in this one. It really is sitting pretty. And, as Matisse is your muse, we can also wonder what he might be thinking as he observed your piece… “Why, Dotty, the cut-outs in this piece seem to be talking to one another!”

  2. Henri, thank you! To my great delight, you’ve expanded my understanding of what I’ve created here. I’m so happy for the conversation that is taking place in this CutUp!

Roseanne! Your responses here are like welcome sunshine—thank you! I love the colors in this one, too. They spark a feeling of color joy as do the two single-flower CutUps I made last week, also, with their similarly bright simplicity of bright primary/secondary colors.

I really enjoy the description of how you engage with the process and the thoughts that lead out of the creating, too. One thing I know for sure – you are making MAGIC in these moments! I just go GAH out loud every time you post!

The process IS magic, isn’t it? AS YOU KNOW from your own sparkle-seeking explorations of the ineffable : )

And yes…you do wonder where Matisse’s mind meandered and who or what what his muse.

    1. MaryAnn, thanks for your feedback—these full-on bright happy colors are not my usual go-to but I am currently loving the full-on bright happy uncomplicated looking-you-right-in-the-face colors and presentation here.

Perhaps if Henri had kept a blog, we might know a bit more of his muse(s) and his internal meandering : )

  6. Your cutup is beautiful with the fantastic colors and shapes. With the text on it, it would also make a good bookcover, I think. I also like the font (I guess it’s Garamond or something like it, a font that I REALLY love!)

    1. LOL—no idea what the font is! The text collage here was something I found in the box where I keep snipped bits of print matter that appeal to me. Thank you for your feedback on various elements of visual language I’ve used in this CutUp.
