Perception

Today’s CutUp holds all the bits cut away yesterday from a piece of hand-painted dark green paper to yield three ‘positive’ dark green parabolas. When adhered to a brightly-colored background, a painting start from last year, those parabolas became the foreground of This Morning the World Is Made of Wind.

Today, I adhered yesterday’s cut-away bits to a second brightly-colored painting start, establishing them physically as the foreground; they are ‘on top’ of the background painting. You might see them as the visually predominant shapes in the art, as the foreground.

You might not.

Figure-ground: always the invitation to see what is in front of our eyes, or foremost in our minds, in more than one way.

Maybe this one is the nighttime version of yesterday’s blustery walk! Would love to see them side by side.

    1. Oh! I love the idea of this CutUp’s being the nighttime version of my blustery morning walk! Perfect! Suddenly, I am reminded of a January night time guided owl walk through the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, and I can feel the crisp deep-freeze of the air, hear the squeak of our boots in the dry deep-freeze snow, and see the moon shining down from the deep-freeze night sky, all here for the taking in this CutUp. Thank you, MaryAnn!

    1. That wind turned out to be such a cobweb clearing gift. Glad it blew through with a yes for you too, Sheila!

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

My compass points: bust through fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
