Background Check

The background check on this CutUp indicates that it began its life as one of several painting starts created in June 2023. I had plans to take the starts on vacation … until the vacation got smoked out by Canadian wildfires!

This week, a card cut from one of the starts auditioned to be cast as a CutUp and got the part. In my ongoing experimentation with backgrounds, I veiled its bright colors with two layers of tissue paper, achieving a very satisfying softening. I then cut shapes from still-bright-and-bold sections of the remainder of the start and followed Matisse’s lead by painting up some fresh collage paper when I needed a darker green contrast than was available.

I’m liking the little happy dance that this CutUp became!

  These CutUps are surprisingly challenging for me. I really have to push up my sleeves and grapple with ALL MANNER of unexpected THINGS I DO NOT KNOW and having to then come up with COUNTERMEASURES for the lack therein. You know of what I speak 🙂

Great title! The softening of the repurposed background with tissue was just the right move and the happy dance of shapes and colors is just right! Well done Dotty!
