Experiments

I remember learning the rudiments of the scientific method in 6th grade, as a student at the American School in the Hague, the Netherlands, and being paired with a classmate to perform a specified experiment. I remember nothing about our question, research, or hypothesis but I can report my personal conclusion: If you spill acid on your Girl Scout Brownie uniform, the acid will eat a hole in the fabric.

Yesterday afternoon, a little power surge of energy moved me to my studio where I opened my sketchbook and went into spontaneous experimental mode. I am grateful to be painting more often of late, grateful to be feeling venturesome, grateful to be captivated by process, grateful to learn something every time I explore with paint and other media.

Here’s the Materials section of my lab report: acrylic paint, India ink and dip pen, Stabilo chunky pencils, high-flow paint, paint straight out of the tube, brushes, Dixie food wrap, torn paper collage, matte medium, credit card, a fine line applicator, and a plastic palette knife.

Great memory leading to an interesting studio experiment! Or maybe the experiment let to the memory. Either way I’m smiling that you used everything but the kitchen sink. And my guess is you might have even used the kitchen sink!

    1. Painted first and then memory popped up when I went to talk about experimentation : )

I stopped by the bathroom sink, and used a hairdrier, too, but no kitchen sink this time!

Thanks for your encouraging comments, MaryAnn.

    1. Thx, Sheila. As it turns out, I’ve gone on to continue this experiment—haven’t reached a conclusion yet and, happily, have not yet spilled any acid on myself yet either!

I can just see you in a lab coat/Brownie uniform creating mad scientist things…like this painting! OMG! WILDNESS! POTENTIAL! PRIMORDIAL HUM!

    1. Lola, I’m laughing at your apt ‘feedback’ re wildness, potential, and primordial hum! I’m not sold on the bubbling beaker of art here but I LOVED throwing caution to the wind as I threw this, that, and the other together. I’m grateful to be getting into my studio more often again and especially grateful to be giving myself over to such experimental exploits!

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

My compass points: bust through fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
