One of the lines from the camp song I’ve been inscribing on my postcards indicates that Takodah is sometimes a place where the rain comes pouring. Much as I might always wish for only sunshine at camp, the rain does sometimes come pouring.
One of those times was a full day of considerable rainfall during a session of Takodah’s end-of-season family camp program. Couldn’t tell you the year but it was probably over 20 years ago. I’d headed to the relative dryness of Hobby Nook to make something—a simple painting, perhaps? a macramé bracelet? something with beads?
I sat down next to a woman whom I’d noticed on opening day but not yet met. Lava Mueller. Turns out she had been a leader during her college years, was on staff during family camp a number of years earlier (aha! thought she looked familiar), had not been at camp for quite a few subsequent years, was now here as a family camper with hubby and two young children in tow. We talked and talked and talked.
What did I make in Hobby Nook that day? I made a friend! A lasting friend named Lava—the best!
Gotta love a rainy day.
