You’ve Got Mail

Ben was a great believer
in the gentle, scholarly art
of letter writing.
I still have his letters.
I save all my correspondence.
—from a novel by Daniel Hecht

My family moved to London at the beginning of my senior year in high school in 1967. Suddenly I lived an ocean away from my friends in New Jersey. The postal system became my lifeline.

In the years since, I have never lost my passion for connecting with others through the mail. I love telling a story and sending it on a journey through the post, or receiving a letter with my name written in the hand of a friend. I love the thrill of breaking and entering an envelope.

A year after moving to London, when I headed to college in Connecticut 3000 miles away—this time away from my family—my mom thought to pen me a letter enough in advance of my arrival on campus that I’d have mail waiting for me in P.O. Box 435. Brilliant!

In that spirit, I have created and sent postcards to my granddaughters so they’ll have correspondence waiting for them on the first mail delivery day at Camp Takodah tomorrow. ❤️ ❤️

This is beyond brilliant! Such foresight for your mom! And you repeating it for granddaughters is also brilliant! Well done! I have a “letter” story that I’ll share with you sometime.

    1. Wasn’t that the sweetest thing for my mom to do? That act of love has stuck to my ribs ever since, and it is such a satisfying act of love to pay forward : )

I look forward to learning of your ‘letter’ story, MaryAnn.

  3. Don’t know how I missed this post! Beautiful cards and the thoughts behind them. Loved getting personal letters and greeting cards, sadly far and in between. Keep up that wonderful tradition.

    1. Carol, thx! Indeed, a wonderful tradition. I have vivid memories of receiving mail at camp, first as a camper. Then, later, as a leader, not only did I RECEIVE mail but also I had the thrill of being the one who got to go into the office to pull all the mail from my cabin’s pigeon hole to DELIVER to everyone in our cabin group!

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

My compass points: bust through fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
