quintessentially taken by storm
my preschool self
invites my grownup senior citizen self
out for a tromp in a foot of snow
after dark tonight,
snow on the ground
snow in the air
everywhere snow!
it falls like crazy,
totally fills the space of illumination
under each street light,
gusts into our eyes
dances into our pockets
sneaks into our not-tall-enough-boots
squeaks and crunches
in response to our rambunctious
romping.
noses drip
cheeks sting with cold
tongues reach for nipping icy pinpricks
—we are in it!

Notes about poem and art:
• “Quintessentially” is the tale of a delicious full-on encounter with a January snowstorm delivered with frigid temps, action-packed bluster, and noteworthy accumulation.
• The Friend across town Who Likes a Good Martini didn’t tap into his inner child during the storm. He did the requisite responsible adult shoveling and snow-blowing, then swapped out boots for fleecy slippers and parked himself in front of his wood stove to enjoy a cocktail.
