Question Exchange with Fellow Creative, Part 3

piatto principale

the main course of creating,
according to my poet/artist

friend’s way of thinking,
is not a particular meal or dish but,
instead,
an actual course—
a flow,

a pathway,
a series of illuminating
moments,

an alchemy,
a transcendence,
a transformation,
a lived experience highly
sensory and immediate,
a space outside of time and place,

a threshold consciousness
with which she becomes one,
inhabiting it as it inhabits her,
animated by
generative energy

and invigorating tension
that resolve at the intersection
of process and product

no matter the process,
no matter the product.

in other words,
not beef wellington,
not quiche lorraine,

not shrimp diavolo,
but a life force

that sustains her from the outside in
and the inside out.

buon appetito!

Notes about poem and art:
My poem and Lola’s art above comprise a partial view of Question Exchange Part 3 of a five-part collaborative creative adventure. Take yourself to Lola’s blog for the details and the question prompts behind today’s post AND to experience her mind-bending art and thought-provoking writing! Her painting, “The Game Breaks Down,” and her accompanying commentary spoke powerfully to me.

    1. MaryAnn, thank you for your enthusiastic response to Lola’s art and commentary and my poem—you’ve helped raise my energy level on this low ceilinged gray morning! A backnote on my poem: its creation involved a vast number of micro-units over the course of many days, supporting our shared understanding of the wonder of micro actions : )

    1. oh dear Lola! What a magnificent lunch we are sharing!!!

Your comment comes to my attention as this gray day gets even grayer with sunset only minutes away, and my brain is addled by two+ weeks of computer dysfunction, and is now further addled by the messy intensive everything-in-a-muddle middle of data transfer to a new (yay!) computer purchased this morning. All my systems are disrupted well beyond the equanimity of this bear of little brain (as Pooh oft referred to himself hahaha)—gaaaah!

BUT!!! here you are sending sunshine and light my way and the reminder that I have poetry in my soul no matter what!!! hot damn! And thank you thank you thank you!

  3. What a great dialogue you two have going! Your metaphor poetry is exquisite! No dish can compare with the inner push the flow of creative energy and Lola’s drawing certainly shows that freedom energy. Looking forward to the next installment!

    1. Carol, thank you for this affirmation of Lola’s and my creative dialogue! My next installment is likely, based on the way things are going currently, to be a classic case of needing to spill many many many words out to find the few that will actually express the pith. I think I’m getting close to where I hope to land!

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

My compass points: bust through fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
