Process! #5

Step 5: Grab a roll of masking or painter’s tape, tear off pieces of differing lengths, and stick them randomly and/or intentionally onto your painting to mask areas that will be covered when you apply new layers of paint to the entire canvas. ✅

Before grabbing tape, I quickly layer on additional bits of color, let the paint dry, and then get busy sticking strips of painter’s tape hither and thither. As instructed, some placements are random, others intentional.

Step 6: Spread a thickish wet layer of paint over the entire canvas, covering some areas with a neutral mix and the rest with white. ✅

Step 7: While that paint layer is still wet, carve line work into it with a palette knife, toothpick, or other implement so as to reveal hints of what’s beneath. ✅

Step 8: Next, and again while the paint is still wet, remove all the pieces of masking tape. ✅

I feel very connected to the initial thoughts I wrote on this canvas, and can still feel their energy despite their having long since become almost completely obscured. I’m grateful for the heart connection to and internalizing of my written 2025 intentions because they just keep getting buried deeper and deeper!

    1. Thanks, Simone : )

This exercise has given me a way to anchor intentions in a more full-bodied way than I might otherwise do.

I sometimes can anticipate what the next step in your process might be…but I did not expect this!

It’s so clear that this project is way more than just playing and painting. I’m quite taken with your mostly hidden intentions….now reconnected with intentional lines.

    1. MaryAnn, fun observations—thank you! This project has been a very engaging one, and well-suited to the past few weeks that have had many interruptions. I like having guidelines to point me in a direction when I bring my distracted brain back to the studio each time. And those underlying intentions have a palpable energy of their own carrying me along.

hmmmm I tried to leave comment on your blog, and received the error message “sorry, comments are closed for this item”

But what I said was how much I adore painter’s tape used this way, and how your “post-tape” pic made me smile pine, feel snow and a crisp winter day!

My Story

In 2014, I grab an unexpected opportunity to paint.

To make art.

I get hooked.

In 2015 I start a blog—a diary of my life as an artist.

I post my paintings and their stories. The good, the bad, the ugly.

My compass points: bust through fear, be playful, get messy, trust my gut.
